Record Cold Temperatures Impact Brazil's Safrinha Corn

Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

Brazil's 2025 corn estimate was left unchanged this week at 129.0 million tons with a neutral bias. I was prepared to increase the Brazil corn estimate 1-2 million tons due to recent rainfall that benefitted the late safrinha corn, but now that is uncertain.

An intense mass of polar air swept into southern Brazil late last week, resulting in record low temperatures last Friday and Saturday in the safrinha producing states of southern Mato Grosso do Sul, Parana, and Sao Paulo.

The late-planted safrinha corn in those states is still filling grain and how much damage to the crop, if any, is yet to be determined. Frost in late May is very unusual, and it will take several days to assess any potential damage.

The picture below was taken Friday morning in Aral Moreira in southern Mato Grosso do Sul. The corn in the background is in the grain-filling phase.
