Mato Grosso is Brazil's largest corn producing and exporting state, but increasing amounts of the corn is being consumed domestically to produce ethanol. The state produced 55.4 million tons of corn in 2024/25 with approximately 13.9 million tons destined for ethanol production or 25% according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea).

Currently, Mato Grosso has 12 corn ethanol plants in operation, 10 units under construction, and 5 projects in the planning stage. Mato Grosso is the largest producer of corn ethanol in the country with a production of more than 5.6 billion liters in 2024/25. More than 20% of the ethanol consumed in Brazil is produced from corn and the trend is growth, driven by the global search for cleaner energy sources.

With the presence of the mills, producers have greater predictability for commercialization of corn. Proximity to industry reduces logistical costs and ensures markets throughout the year. This scenario has encouraged the expansion of corn planted acreage and increased investments in the crop, driven by the relationship between supply and more favorable demand.
