The Brazilian government proposal to raise the mandatory mixture of ethanol into gasoline from 30 to 32% (E32) will be analyzed at the next meeting of the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE), scheduled for early May. The increased mixture strengthens biofuels and can increase ethanol consumption by 1 billion liters per year.

The chief executive of the Association of Sugar, Ethanol and Bioenergy Producers (NovaBio) points out that increased use of ethanol can reduce Brazil's dependence on imported gasoline and its inherent price volatility.

The increase in ethanol consumption can be achieved by established infrastructure in Brazil. According to the Union of Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industries (Unica), the industry has sufficient installed capacity to meet the growth of demand, considering the production of sugarcane and corn ethanol. Data from the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and biofuels (ANP) indicated that 16 new corn ethanol facilities are expected to begin operation in Brazil over the next twelve months.
